6 Red, Careful Coordinates!

5th April 2022realsmart admin

Well done to 6 red, for your hard work this past week with all things coordinates!

We have ‘played with it‘ and ‘explored it‘ through practical learning, before applying these skills to ‘apply it‘ within our maths learning!

Coordinates are such a fundamental skill to learn, as it prepares us for real-life experiences such as map reading, chess, battleships and digital gaming… to name a few!

Pirate Remote Controls

5th April 2022realsmart admin

This week, as part of our “Land Ahoy ” theme, we have been designing and creating our own pirate remote controls.

Our brief was to design a remote control for a pirate to use. We had to consider his needs and use the information we were given to create something unique to him.  Here are some of the designs and the finished products.

Together Tuesday in 3 Blue

5th April 2022realsmart admin

During Children’s Mental Health Week, we used some of our time this afternoon to complete an activity for Together Tuesday.

We used this time to think about and look at our support bubble and who is around us to support us and lift us up.

3 Blue completed their own hot air balloon to show all of the people who are around to support them – this allowed the children time to reflect on who they can approach when they need support.

Magic Maths Work!

5th April 2022realsmart admin

1 Blue have worked really hard looking at related facts in their maths work. We “played with it” by finding the fact families, “developed it” with our friends before “connecting our learning”.

Great job 1 Blue!

Upper Key Stage Two Netball

5th April 2022realsmart admin

This week, our Upper Key Stage Two Netball Team took part in this year’s netball tournament at Temple Park.

The children displayed all of the Navigators qualities that we have now come to expect in Years 5 and 6, despite the fact that they haven’t had many opportunities to practise as a team recently.

Well done everyone and special thanks to Mrs Hudson.

Science Spies!

5th April 2022realsmart admin

6 Red have recapped our understanding of light which travels in straight lines.

We used this knowledge to deepen and explore how light can be reflected to change directions.

Connecting to our Wars of the World theme, we discussed the importance of using periscopes, which were designed by inventor Johanas Guetenberg, to spy on the axis (enemies!).

Once we had discussed how light is reflected, we created our own periscopes, before playing with the process of using reflection to ‘spy around corners’ in our whole-class game of hide and seek tag!

We’re Going On A Hunt!

5th April 2022realsmart admin

This week in 1 red we have been making story maps to help us retell our own story. We based our stories around one of our favorite books, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt. We used repetitive language and adjectives to go alongside our actions. We hope you enjoy watching our videos as much as we enjoyed making them!

5 Blue Perform The Haka

5th April 2022realsmart admin

Haka is a ceremonial dance in Māori culture. It is often performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted or chanted accompaniment.

5 Blue had great fun designing their own intimidating movements and creating their chant.

Reception ‘play with it and experience it’. Help is at hand

5th April 2022realsmart admin

As part of our Learning Means The World theme ‘Help is at hand’ we had a visit from a VIP. One of our parents came into school to talk about her job as an A+E nurse. The children were able to ask questions to develop their understanding, play with some of the equipment and experience being looked after by a nurse! Lots of the children then decided they wanted to be a nurse when they are bigger.

Children’s Mental Health Week 2022

5th April 2022realsmart admin

Last week (7th-13th February), schools, youth groups, organisations and individuals across the UK took part in Children’s Mental Health Week (CMHW). This year’s theme was ‘Growing Together’.

Across the course of the week, we discussed how ‘Growing Together’ is about growing emotionally and finding ways to help each other grow.  Challenges and setbacks can help us to grow and adapt.  Trying new things can help us to move beyond our comfort zone into a new realm of possibility and potential.  However, emotional growth is often a gradual process that happens over time, and sometimes we might feel a bit ‘stuck’.

We dedicated some time each day to focus on our mental health…

We had MINDFUL MONDAY, where we all did something do relax. On TOGETHER TUESDAY, we encouraged the children to think about who they had in their lives to support them when they’re feeling worried or overwhelmed.  Exercise is a great way to improve mental health by reducing anxiety, depression and negative mood so the middle of the week saw us take part in a WORK OUT WEDNESDAY.  When we’re feeling down, we might forget about how much we’ve already achieved.  On THROWBACK THURSDAY the children were encouraged to think about how they’ve grown – physically, academically and emotionally.  On FUN FRIDAY, the children came into school in non-uniform and were encouraged to ‘Dress to Express’! We think they all looked brilliant!
