The children in 2 Blue have had a great start to the year. We have made messages with counters and flags and looked at various ways of communicating. We have worked on working out the tens and ones in any given number and what it looks like. We have settled in to our new routines and even though there is a little bit more to do, we know we are going to smash Year 2!
As it is coming to the end of our school year we have celebrated our hard work and achievements by taking part in a fantastic fun day. We enjoyed bowling, climbing, drawing, dancing, watching stunts, flight school and even pushing potatoes.
This week as part of Diversity week we have been looking at the many variations of ‘Family’. We decided that a family show love, support and care for each other and we looked at all the different types of family and how they are the same as ours and how they are different . We concluded that no matter their differences a ‘Family’ is important to our mental well being.
In our English lessons this week we have been learning how to read, follow and write instructions. We decided to make chocolate and syrup rice krispie cakes. We followed the instructions very carefully to ensure that our cakes turned out correctly. We then ate them, which was our favourite part!
Today we have been learning about ordinal numbers and where we see them. The children agreed that they are mostly used in races so we decided to hold our own race morning where we awarded each other with the correct ordinal number. We had lots of fun!
We have been learning about the importance of solar power and how we can use it to help with our daily lives. We decided to make a solar oven and cook biscuits. We followed the instructions very carefully and worked well as part of a team. We put our ovens in the sun and waited for our chocolate topping to melt. The chocolate had started to melt and we discussed that if it had been in the sun all day it would have worked even better. They tasted delicious!
During RE day we have been looking at the Christian celebration surrounding a childs birth. We learned about what special items are used during a baptism, who attends and their role and where they go to hold a baptism. We then took turns in baptising our own baby and said the words ‘In the name of the Father, Son, and the holy spirit’ as we used the blessed water. We found out that that Christians use water as a symbol of new rebirth as it represents washing away any sins.
In our Learning Means the World theme of ‘Light Up The World’ we have been looking at what objects and materials give us light. We looked at a selection of pictures then worked together to decide if they give us a natural light or a man made light. We the looked at using shadows and shading in our art lesson and created some lovely pictures using these light and dark effects.
In maths this week we are looking at arrays and how they can help us with our group counting. We looked at the rows and columns and how we can use these to write a number sentence. We had a selection of arrays and worked together to write the column addition and the row addition.
In our Learning Means The World theme, ‘Light Up The World’ we have been looking at the sun and creating leaflets and posters of the rules we need to follow in order to be safe when we are out in the sun. We have found out that suncream, glasses, hat and t-shirts are very important. We then designed our own split pin lever card to show the sun and how we keep ourselves safe
