Growing Butterflies

30th June 2023N Fada

We decided it would be nice for the children to get a butterfly garden kit so we could grow our own butterflies.

The kit came with a tub of tiny caterpillars and some food. Over a couple of weeks the children enjoyed watching the caterpillars grow as they ate up all of their food in the tub.

The caterpillars then climbed to the very top of the tub and turned into a chrysalis. The children found this stage very interesting and enjoyed watching as a harder shell formed around the caterpillar.

After less than a week, the butterflies emerged from their chrysalis. We put some fresh orange and sugar water out for the butterflies to eat and over the next few days we let them build up their strength before releasing them into the world.

Some of the children were lucky enough to get to hold the butterflies before they flew off!

Wildflowers to honour the Coronation.

30th June 2023N Fada

To mark the Coronation, we were sent a packet of wildflower seeds to celebrate His Majesty the King’s love of nature. The packets of seeds included native annual wildflower species such as cornflower, corn poppy, corn chamomile, corncockle, corn marigold and night-flowering catchfly.

We were thrilled to take part in this initiative and sow wildflowers to celebrate the Coronation. It is a great opportunity for our children to connect with nature and make a wildflower habitat that supports wildlife. We can’t wait to see the wildflowers bloom and provide food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators in our school garden.

1 Red can handle data!

28th June 2023L Chisholm

In 1 Red this week we have been looking at ways in which we can show information. We decided to ask our friends their favourite fruit and then discussed the best way to show this. We decided a tally chart was a good way but after a while this became confusing as we couldn’t be sure that we hadn’t already counted that answer. We then decided that creating a bar chart was the easiest and best way to show our results. We are fantastic!

Year 4 and The Battle of Hastings

28th June 2023s begum

This week, we have started our new theme, Saxon King. To kick-start the theme, we spent time researching about Harold Godwinson. We researched about his early life, Wessex, The Battle of Stamford Bridge and The Battle of Hastings. To support our learning, we had a super afternoon re-enacting The Battle of Hastings with 4 Blue acting as the Anglo-Saxons and 4 Red acting as the Norman-French army. We had a fantastic time!

Shadows in 1 Red

16th June 2023L Chisholm

This week in our ‘Light Up The World’ theme we have been looking at light and dark; what creates a shadow and how shadows change over time.  The children have measured shadows throughout the day, made their own shadow puppets and figured out that a solid object does not let light through and that is how a shadow is formed.  They had great fun using the torches to create big and small shadows.

2 Red’s Wild Art!

16th June 2023L Phillips

In Year 2’s Going Wild theme we have been focusing our art skills on animal prints.

We used things like pencil, oil pastel, chalk pastel and paint, along with some more unusual media such as shaving foam, netting, sponges and cutlery to recreate different animal patterns. We took inspiration from these patterns to create our very own, unique animal print.
