Today in our Learning Means The World session, we have been looking at the 7 continents. We learned a new song to remember the continents and we even ordered them from greatest to smallest. Did you know that Asia is the greatest continent? We then had great fun matching the continents to their place on the map.
The half term in PE, we are looking at gymnastics. This week, we looked at how to make our bodies narrow so we can move under and over various equipment. We learned that in order for our bodies to be narrow, our legs and feet need to be together and our arms can either be by our sides or above our heads. We had lots of fun and especially liked performing the narrow jumps off of the small podium.
These are the Year 5 and 6 School Sports Leaders for Hebburn Lakes Primary School. They are learning how to support all of the children in Physical Education (PE) and Physical Activity and will be completing a series of tasks throughout the year to enhance our leadership. The first session was the launch day where the children found out what they will be doing, the rules involved and their first task for this half term. They also participated in a bunch of activities which involved resilience, communication and team work which are the foundations to being a good leader.
In Year 1, we have been looking at instructions and how we use them. Today, we decided to make a witch’s brew using lots of different ingredients. We used our imagination when making the brew and changed the name of the ingredients to fit the theme of Halloween. We used sequencing vocabulary to orally tell our friends how to make the brew before finally drinking it. We loved being witches in this lesson!
Today in our Learning Means the World lesson, we have been doing some computing. We have been looking at what algorithms are and how they work. We got into pairs and one person was a robot and the other was the instructor. We used directional language like “forwards and backwards” to give the robot an algorithm (a series of instructions). We also loved performing our algorithms for the camera!
In Year 1, we have been making bags for a fairy. We designed our bag yesterday and then today we made them. We had lots of rules that we had to follow so that the bag was right for the fairies, for example it needed to be small so they can carry it and it also cannot harm any nature so flowers were off limits! We took great pride in our creations and we were so proud of how our bags turned out and we hope the fairies love them just as much as we do!
This week in PE, we have been learning about different ways to run and jump. We played a lovely game called “Here come the sharks!” where the children had to run away from the sharks to avoid being caught. We also did a jumping carousel, where the children practiced how to jump in different ways. They did star jumps, tuck jumps, pencil jumps and loads more! We were exhausted at the end of it!
Today in 1 Blue, we have been looking at fairytales as a part of our Learning Means The World Theme. We read the story of Little Red Riding Hood and we decided to get our aprons ready in order to bake Grandma’s cookies like in the story. We had a go at weighing out the ingredients, mixing them together and then we cut out our own cookies. We can’t wait to taste them!

We have been so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Amy who was from a company called Active Futures. Active Futures run a range of sporting activities around the North East and have been running some of these in our local area. This week the children engaged in an activity called Futsal which is like a smaller scale game of football. Amy showed the children some tricks to do with the football and then played lots of games. The children really enjoyed their sessions and even received a leaflet to take home with all of the information about the activities that Active Futures run. Please feel free to have a look and sign up to the activities!
Today 1 Blue joined the rest of the school for our VE Day picnic. We had a lovely packed lunch with our friends and listened to some songs. It was amazing to see the bunting that we had created hung up for the occasion!
