1 Red Knowing their Directions

In Maths this week we have been looking at position and direction.  We used lots of mathematical vocabulary to describe where we were or give our friends directions.  We know full turn, half turn, 3/4 turn and 1/4 turn.  We then moved onto forwards, backwards, left and right.  We had great fun directing our friends around the classroom, completing dances that included directions for us to follow and, possibly the most fun of all

……we programmed a Beebot with directions to arrive at a given destination!

We have just started our new theme ‘Light Up The World’ and one of our first lessons was to look at the difference between light and dark in all aspects of our life. We looked at a few pieces of music and decided which instruments played ‘light’ music and which ones were best suited to represent ‘dark music’. As a group, we then composed a light and dark tune.

Measuring Masters in 1 Red!

This week we have been measuring using objects, scales and rulers.  We have been estimating how heavy, light, tall or short our chosen objects were. We even used a ruler and were able to measure using centimetres and half centimetres! It was great fun using the resources and finding out if our estimates were correct.

In our Learning Means The World theme we looked at programming and the algorithms we can make.  We used Scratchjr to start looking at programming commands and making our sprite move across the screen.  We worked with our partner and wrote a set of commands together to complete our activity.  It was great fun!

Year 1 know all about plants!

In our theme of Unity In The Community we have been looking at our local area and discussing what we can see around us daily.  The children realised that their area has lots of trees and plants and we discussed what these plants needed to grow.  We then planted our own Lima bean and we can’t wait to see if we get beans from it.  We then labelled a plant and if  you ask us,

we can tell you the difference between an Evergreen tree and a Deciduous tree (Yes we are that clever!)

Year 1 were out of this world!

Year 1 loved our theme of ‘Out Of This World’ on world book day.  They came dressed as all manner of intergalactic oddities.  We based our activities around the book, ‘There’s an alien in your book’ by Tom Fletcher. We firstly created our own alien using playdough and thought of its name, which planet it came from and what it likes to eat (I’m a little scared by how many aliens are out there who want to eat Teachers!).  We then built a rocket to take our aliens back to their home planet (phew).  In the afternoon we enjoyed learning about electricity and gas reactions with a Scientist.  We found out that our bodies conduct electricity and if we hold hands we become a circuit.  We also found out that trapped gas eventually has to be released and we used this knowledge to blast off some rockets.  We have had a great day and can’t wait until next year!

Learning about Judaism in 1 Red

This term we are looking at the religion of Judaism in our R.E. sessions.  The children have looked at a Synagogue and the important artefacts it holds.  We also looked at some of their celebrations and how they differ to the ones we know.  We created our own star of David and a Menorah and were very respectful recognising and understanding differences.

 

I Red went litter picking

We have been looking at our community and what we can do to make it better.  1 Red decided that the wind had blown everything towards our classroom and because we are a school community they wanted to clear the area.  The children did a brilliant job just in time for the parents coming.

Year 1 Coffee Morning

Year 1 hosted a coffee morning for their parents as part of their ‘unity in the Community’ theme.  They shared reading, maths and physical games with their adults and it was a great success.  Many of the parents said what a great time they had had and that they wished they could have stayed longer.  Our children, as usual, were brilliant and showed off many off their skills and even introduced their parents to each other to increase their community. Well done Year 1!
