This week we have looked at the physical features of the Arctic and named them. We then created our own Arctic pictures using chalk. We included the features such as icebergs and mountains in our artwork.
This is week two of our visit to 🇨🇳 China! Â We enjoyed exploring noodles with chopsticks, making money wallets, creating Chinese flags, making dragon heads and then having a dragon dance around our school, Chinese writing and of course the food tasting! What a busy week!
As part of our Learning Means the a World theme, ‘Come Fly With me Asia’ we have been looking at China, it’s culture, traditions and what you might see if you visit. We looked at the Chinese Zodiac and the 12 animals that represented each year. The children in our class were born in either the year of the ‘dog’ or ‘rooster’. We went outdoors and raced against each other using the 12 animal masks to see who won each time. The children were great sports and had lots of fun. They have also been looking at Chinese writing and having a go! We also have a Chinese restaurant that the children are visiting regularly!
We have been learning about the Harvest Festival, why we traditionally have this festival in the UK and why. We then looked at various foods including fruit and vegetables and where they come from. The children used their senses to describe how they looked, felt and smell. They then became artists and drew some of the foods! Later, we will be tasting some vegetable soup!
Year 4 have shown their amazing art skills this week. They have created their own printing designs, made them using lino pads and then used paint to create a multi-layered piece of work.
This half term Year 3 have been learning all about animation in our Learning Means The World theme ‘That’s All Folks’. We were very fortunate to have a visit from Mr. Robert from the OpenZone who taught the children how to create animations using iPads. The children used a form of animation that we have been learning about which was Stop-Motion animation. They had a great day and created some amazing animations!
The Nursery children all agreed that fruit and vegetables are healthy and we set about exploring. First we used all our senses to explore a range of fruits and vegetables, talking about them using descriptive vocabulary such as furry, soft, wet, sticky, smooth and sweet. We printed with different types of fruit and vegetables, talking about the colours and shapes. We investigated which fruit and vegetables float and which ones sink and we have used our knowledge of shape and number to make fruit faces. Why not continue exploring at home and see if you notice any interesting fruit and vegetables while you are out and about.
As part of our ‘Happily Ever After’ theme we decided that our favourite story character would benefit from a pot to keep their favourite item safe eg. Cinderella could keep her jewelery in or Granny could keep her biscuits in it to hide them from The Big Bad Wolf. We used clay and made a thumb pot. We looked at how to pinch, mould and manipulate our clay to make our desired shape. We then used a range of tools to ‘score’ our clay to make it patterned.
As part of our ‘A World of Bright Ideas‘ theme, 6 Blue have recently been creating their own range of greetings cards. We looked into the meanings of the terms ‘copyright’ and ‘trademark’ before planning our designs. The children printed the cards using embossed polystyrene sheets, rollers and block printing ink to create some very professional-looking end products. Well done everyone – here is a sample of some of the cards!
This week Year 2 began their journey on their Four Seasons Project. This project will take a full year to complete as we use our surroundings and times of year to collect research, evidence and experiences.
We named our first task… Autumn Awesomeness!
On our Autumn walk around our school grounds we collected deciduous and evergreen leaves as evidence of the seasonal changes before working in teams to create brilliant natural art.
