A very busy Spring 1 RE day at Hebburn Lakes!
As pat of our current theme ‘Athens V Sparta’ we have been looking at persistence, determination and team work. We have tried to balance spoons on our noses- which isn’t easy but we were determined to do it and working as a team of structural engineers to create the tallest tower we could.
In 3 Blue we have been writing newspaper articles based on the events in the book The Tin Forest by Helen Ward . They were all so amazing that we have now created a whole class newspaper for everyone to read. Here are just a few examples of our amazing work.
Today in Year 1, we have been looking at environmental issues, one of which was litter. We discussed how it is everybody’s responsibility to look after the environment and ways in which we could do so. We then went out litter picking! We are happy to say that our school looks amazing and that actually there wasn’t lots of litter to pick which means that Hebburn Lakes Primary School is amazing at looking after the environment!
1 Red are having great fun at home using the Math’s App ‘NUMBOTS’. They are using Mathematical skills previously learnt to apply to this great game and the children are really enthusiastic about beating their personal scores each day. It’s wonderful to see their enthusiasm and confidence with Math’s grow through a simple App. If your child hasn’t already used the App we highly recommend it in year one.

1 Red had great fun using the large apparatus in PE this week. They used their gross motor skills to help this them travel across, over and under various large apparatus. Whilst finding some elements challenging everyone gave each part a good go and had a wonderful time in the process.
As part of our Jigsaw lessons we have had designed and made our own potato characters. The children thought carefully about what characteristics their characters would have.
Today the children took part in class debate. The children formed a debate team consisting of a ‘for’ and ‘against’ team. Some children also took on role of an adjudicator and made decisions regarding which team had the most compelling argument.
We had some very special visitors this afternoon! Our Learning means The World theme this week was ‘Police, fire, ambulance!’ Some very kind police officers came to chat to the children. They told them about all their job and let everyone have a turn in the car, try on some of their uniform and of course have a turn of the lights and siren! We had a fabulous afternoon.
Today in RE, we discussed and explored why Lent is important to Christians. We discussed what Lent is and created a booklet all about Lent. Then, we created some artwork, using water colours to create a sunset background with a silhouette of cross to represent the cross that Jesus died on.
