This week we have been looking at the various animals and people that live in the Arctic. We have looked at the Inuit people and their customs regarding their food and clothing. We have used our design and technology skills to create a split pin Arctic Wolf and our art skills to create a collage of an Inuit’s coat. We looked at the materials and their properties to see which material would be best in the harsh cold weather of the Arctic.
In our Learning Means the World theme, ‘Zero to Hero’, 2 Red were introduced to the artist Christy Brown.
Due to his cerebral palsy, Christy Brown had to overcome challenges, persevere and use his determination to find a way to produce his artwork.
2 Red spent their art lessons using their non-dominant hand – persevering and using their determination to create their own versions of his art. They even tried painting using their feet, just like Christy Brown, to write their name.
Unfortunately School Council could not attend the Armistice service in Monkton Village as it was on Saturday this year. Hebburn Lakes has still placed a wreath at the memorial. We will remember them ❤️
Mrs Moody held a special assembly today ahead of Remembrance Day this weekend on Saturday 11th November. Remembrance Day marks the day that World War One ended, at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month in 1918. The children learned about why poppies are such an important part of our tributes to those lost in battle and we also observed a period of silence to respect those affected by wars past and present. A wreath of remembrance will also be kindly left at the war memorial in Hebburn on behalf of Hebburn Lakes Primary School by Mrs Richardson.
To start our new Learning means the world theme ‘Cry Freedom’, 7 Blue listened to The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughn-Williams. We discussed what pictures the music created in our minds and how it made us feel. The soaring melody reminded us of bird’s soaring through the sky so the children wrote a Haiku poem called ‘Freedom of the Birds’  Â
In 7 Blue we have been creating a dance based around slavery. We explored different dance motifs then added our own movements to create our own dance piece based on the idea of being bound by slavery and longing for freedom. Â
We have started our new Learning Means The World theme, Come Fly With Me Asia. First we are visiting India. We have looked at some Indian artefacts. We talked about the Sagan envelopes which people gave money in. We have been trying on Lengha dresses and some people have been given a Bindi. Everyone was given the opportunity for a Tikka (religious red dot) on their forehead and we have been saying ‘Namaste’ hello and ‘Shukriah’ thank you. Mrs Sikka also blessed us with some water. The children also learned about the celebration Raksha Bandhan, we then made some bracelets. Ask the children to tell you about the celebration 🇮🇳⭐️
In 7 Blue we have been exploring the history and origins of slavery around the world. Today we found out that slavery and the slave trade existed in Africa for over 1000 years. The children took part in a role play, becoming news-reporters and presented some ‘breaking news’ to explain what had happened to the African population.  Â
In 1 Red this week we have been looking at different Arctic animals and how they keep warm; their prey and predators; where they live and what they eat. The children all thought that living in the Arctic would be very cold for the animals, especially the ones in the icy sea. We decided to do an experiment to see if having blubber would make a difference to how we feel the cold. We dipped our hands in icy water brrrrrrr then created a ‘Blubber Glove’ to see if our hand was warmer. IT WAS! We found out that blubber is a good insulator.
As part of our theme ‘Cry Freedom’ we have been discussing slavery and what it means. We looked at different dance motifs and developed them to create a dance piece.
