Year 4 vs Vincent van Gogh

7th March 2024L Davison

This week, Year 4 have been studying the works of Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. First we found out a little about him, then we had a class critique of some of his art work. We looked at the style of his work and the way that he used lines to create different moods and images.

Finally, after practising different techniques, we tried to recreate one of van Gogh’s more famous pieces ‘Starry Night’. Van Gogh painted it from memory during the day, as he was not able to paint from his bedroom. But he was able to create sketches in ink and charcoal and it was these sketches that we recreated. Have a look at some of our fabulous sketchbook and art work.

Designing and Creating a Congratulations Card

4th March 2024s begum

In DT we designed and created a congratulations card for the winner of the class election that took place just before half-term. We designed a card that had a moving part, using levers and linkages. Once we finished creating our cards, we evaluated them. We discussed what we liked about our designs, the challenges we faced and how we would improve or change our design if we did it again.

Desert Decisions – Which is the most valuable?

15th February 2024s begum

This week, we have started our new theme, ‘Law and Order’. For our first lesson, we had to reach an agreement on who had which commodity whilst stranded in a desert. We had to choose from a bottle of water, bananas, a tent, a mobile phone and a multi-tool. Once we had made the decision, we had to decide which commodity was the most valuable to us and rank them in order of importance. We also had to pick our leader, who then explained our decision to the rest of the class.

Exciting Eruption!

15th February 2024lhockings

Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed learning about volcanoes this week!

We talked about the different types of volcanoes, researched where volcanoes are found, how they are formed and why they erupt.

We then carried out our volcano project and made our own volcanoes in small groups. We started off with a plastic bottle and created our volcano shape around this using newspaper. Next, we used mod rock to finalise our volcano structure and finally painted them.

Then the fun began! We took our volcanoes outside and conducted the “eruption”. Using bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar we created a chemical reaction to mimic the eruption process.

Year 5 worked exceptionally in their groups; showing real team work, communication and scientific skills to carry out this project. It’s safe to say we had a blast!
